ERGObaby Original Infant Support Cushion Review
Before Eliette was born (almost exactly 2 years ago), I was drawn to the idea of attachment parenting—baby wearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, the whole shebang. Well, in order to even attempt this, I needed some great comfy baby gear. Between the time Elie was close to 4 months, until about 8 months, I constantly used my trusty Moby Wrap. But before and after that few months, I was obsessed with the Ergo, which is awesome. The Ergo carrier is comfortable (for the longest period of time), and you can easily breastfeed with it on, without anyone else being the slightest bit aware you’re doing it, which is SO helpful when you’re feeding on demand and have a hungry infant. One of my good friends, who has worn hers with 2 boys, dubbed her Ergo the “dream machine” because of how comfortable your baby is in it, and the fact that it magically puts them to sleep even when they are at their fussiest. I used to feed Elie at 8 months while shopping at the market, and no one had a clue… well at least no one showed any sign that they had a clue.
But before that critical 4 month mark, both my husband and I would wear our little bean in the Ergo with the Original Infant Support Cushion Insert. The insert allows your tiny baby, in those beginning few months, to be cozy and comfortable with all of the benefits of baby-wearing. The Support Cushion is specially padded and shaped , and can be quickly and easily placed in the carrier and readjusted or folded to pad just the right places for your baby. Your little one is then cradled in a cozy, protected environment. This was great for us because it was the only carrier my husband would wear, and with the insert, there was no need to purchase a ton of other carriers. It makes the Ergo useable from infancy through toddlerdom. ERGObaby also now makes a newer model of the infant insert which easily enables parents to ensure that their newborn is positioned correctly on the pillow, keeping pressure off the developing sacrum, and supports the development of the spine and hips. It snaps closed around the infant, holding the baby in a cozy, protected environment close to the heart, as well as in an ergonomically correct natural sitting position. On top of all of the benefits of using one of the inserts with the best carrier ever, both of them are under $40 (range from about $19 – $38), which is definitely less expensive than having to buy more than one complete carrier for each baby stage.
I know this review is about the Infant Support Cushion, but I can’t say enough about ERGObaby, and I have to throw in the fact that even though Elie is a toddler, I STILL use the Ergo all of the time, mostly in the back-pack position, and she loves it. If you are only going to buy one carrier, THIS IS THE ONE! Every parent I know that owns an Ergo, swears by it, and it really is the best.
If you have a Summer baby, like I did, the insert does tend to get pretty warm when it’s scorching outside. When we were in the middle of a heat wave in LA just weeks after Eliette was born, we just tried to stay inside as much as possible wherever there was air-conditioning, and that seemed to solve the problem of over-heating.
ERGObaby uses 100% organic cotton, and practices fair labor, which are just a couple of reasons amongst many showing that this is a great company to support and shop from.
