ECO-heater Review

The Good

We have an older house (1961) and it is quite obvious during the summer and winter months that we are not well insulated.  We have new windows, which helps, but I couldn’t help but notice both of the kids rooms stayed colder in the winter and warmer in the summer.  The winter was a challenge.  I could not fathom running our central heating system all night long (we live in San Diego, it just not that cold!) but I also couldn’t sleep knowing my babies were chilly overnight.  I did a bunch of research on space heaters and quickly nixed that idea with all of the potential fire hazards.  One last internet search turned me onto the ECO-heater, and we have one in each kid’s room now!  Absolutely awesome!  The ECO-heater is mounted on the wall about 6 inches off the ground. It is flat panel, about 24” x 24”.  It is just plain white, so although it does take up considerable space on the wall, you really do not notice it after it’s installed (the user’s manual even mentioned that it is safe to paint the panel using water-based latex paint, if you really want it to match!)  Here are some of the stats that make the ECO-heater so “hot”: Effective — Warms a 10′ x 12′ room with only 400 Watts…great for bedrooms Efficient — Uses 73% less electricity than other room heaters Economical — Save up to 50% or more on your total heating costs   ECO-heaters are wall-mounted electric convection space heaters that use less than 1/3 of the energy typical space heaters use. An environmentally-responsible alternative to 1,500 watt space heaters, an ECO-heater heats a 120 square foot space using only 400 watts. ECO-heaters are less than 24″ square, and are mounted 3/4″ off the wall to create a convection heat channel. The air between the wall and the panel is heated and rises, drawing cool air from the floor, thus silently circulating warm air throughout the room. ECO-heaters are easy to install, can be painted to match any décor, and plug into a standard outlet.   ECO-heaters are tested and certified to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) safety standard 2021 and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 60335-2. What I love about our ECO-heaters is the way they make the room so cozy and warm.  It is not that sensation of hot, dry air blowing like you feel from some heaters.  This is definitely more of a constant, but low, warmth added to the room.  We switch them on while the kids are in the bath and their rooms are perfect for them when they hop into bed.   Now I can sleep more soundly knowing they are warm even if they kick their covers off!

The Bad

Here is an excerpt from the website regarding the ECO-heater and safety: “The top concerns with heater safety are surface temperature and the possibility of a fire. ECO-heaters operate at a relatively low surface temperature of about 165°F. This ensures that, although the heater is hot to touch, it will not burn the skin if touched. While this gives parents and pet owners peace of mind when leaving the heater on while their children or pets are alone in the room, smaller children should not be left unattended due to their limited reflex development and the possibility that they may not react and pull away when they feel the heat. With no exposed elements or areas for dust accumulation, the risk of fire is almost nil. Our panel heaters eliminate risks associated with portable fan heaters, such as tipping over and paperwork fires, instigated by home or office clutter.” With that said, obviously you do not want your small children touching this heater.  We first put it in my son’s room when he was 2 ½.  Cash is just the kind of kid that once we told him not to touch it, he never has.  Currently, we have an ECO-heater in my 15 month old daughter’s room as well (she’s in a crib).  Once Kenzie is in a big girl bed, we might have issues.  She is definitely more ‘curious’ than Cash and I don’t know if we can trust her not to touch it.  I know that a friend had the same issue with their toddler and ended up mounting the heater higher on the wall, and they still felt that it did a good job of warming up the room.  If in doubt, I might recommend this for a slightly older child’s room so that you can have the conversation of “Do not touch this!”

The Ugly

As its name state, this heater is super eco-friendly.  Read this: Electric heating is the cleanest form of heating. There are no harmful pollutants emitted from the ECO-heater as there are with gas-fired central heating systems or fuel oil boilers. Because of the ECO-heater’s low power consumption and high efficiency, our precious natural resources are conserved to a greater degree.  And this… ECO-heaters are the most economical heater on the market today. Because the heater is of such a low wattage (only 400 Watts), it uses less than 4 cents of electricity per hour to operate [depending on the region] or the equivalent power consumed by four incandescent light bulbs. ECO-heaters produce a constant background heat while using very little electricity. Unlike other heating solutions, ECO-heaters are inexpensive to purchase, install, and operate, although keep you comfortably warm for less! Leveraging convection heating technology ECO-heaters are designed to be left on for long periods of time using little energy. ECO-heaters are the efficient, versatile and low-cost solution to keeping warm in winter. Nice and GREEN!
